Happy Birthday Eminem!!

Since today is Eminem's birthday, I figured I'd tell the story of one of my most memorable times with him and why I stopped drinking for 6 months straight after the first time we met at Marilyn's On Monroe back in '01.

I had recently started working at Guitar Center in 2001 when I was approached by Denaun Porter, then Kon Artis of D-12, about doing some work with D-12, working on some records for Em, and working on Dr. Dre's "Detox". Of course, being new on the scene as far as production goes, I jumped at the chance to work with these great artists. I'd admired each of them for years and was eager to learn.

I went into the studio with Denaun a few times and worked with him on A LOT of material. Some released and some unlreased. Hmm... wonder what that stuff sounds like now. Anyways, one day while I was working, Denaun called me and said, "You ready to meet Em?" I said "HELL YEAH". LOL!! I was super excited to leave work that day. When I got off, I didn't go home to change clothes, freshen up or anything. I headed straight Downtown to meet Denaun and Em.

As always, even to this day, Denaun showed up late. I just sat in the parking lot, waiting, super eager to go inside to meet Eminem. When Denaun got there, we headed inside. There wasn't much happening downstairs, so we headed upstairs. When we open the door, there sat Eminem and 2 of the most beautiful women I'd ever seen in my life. Denaun introduced me and I had NO idea what to say. I was super nervous.

Em asked me if I wanted a drink, and trying to be "down", I said yes. I wasn't really much of a drink at the time, but I didn't want him to think I was square, so I said, "Yeah, I'll get something." Em said, "Cool, just tell them to put it on my tab. Get whatever you want."... and THAT I did. We were there 'til they close and I had a ton to drink. Remember, I wasn't much of a drinker. So... from what I can remember now, I drank whatever I say other people drinking. I was a big Honey Brown drinker but not much into liquor, so I just tried what I saw. I had a few beers, a couple Long Islands, an Amaretto Sour, a couple Fuzzy Navels, a glass on wine, and we had a few shots. I was LIT!!

When it was time to go, I stumbled to my car. Denaun asked me if I was ok, and me trying to be cool, I said, "Yeah, I'm good. Go ahead". I jumped on the express to get home and I literally had my head hanging out of the window the entire time. Lucky for me, there was barely any traffic on the road and I made it home. I pulled up in the backyard behind my Mom's duplex and sat in the car for a minute. The way the back entrance is setup, you open the door and go up one step into the kitchen, or down the stairs to the basement, which doubled as my bedroom. I opened the door and I have NO idea what happened from there. All I can tell you is that my Mom woke me up the next morning ON THE LANDING!! From the next day on, I vowed I would never drink again. We all do that when we get super sick. Lol!!

I didn't drink for 6 months straight!!

So, after 6 months, I'm doing a show with my band Alacocious at Club Network and we're on our second break. Me and Bassist, Ibrahim Jones decide to go grab a drink from guess where... Marilyn's On Monroe. We sat at the bar and order a couple top-shelf Long Islands. Now remember, I hadn't drank in 6 months. Ibrahim pretty much crushed his. I was taking my time with it since it has been so long. We didn't have a lot of time because we had to get back to our show. I had about 1/3 of it, stood up, and could barely walk. We walked back to Network with me literally hanging from Ibrahim's shoulder. I was telling him the whole time back that I wouldn't be able to finish the last set. Luckily, when we walked in, they told us we were done for the night. YES!!

Oh to be young, dumb, inexperienced, and out of control. I'm glad those days are over. Oh yeah, after that incident, I didn't drink for another 6 months. Those 2 days in my life taught me "how to drink". I'm glad I'm safe and I'm still here. Be careful when you drink!!
